The East – Blogger’s Meet
It was a fine week when we were invited to a food blogger’s meet at The East – Courtesy of our friend Sammienatorr (I dare you ask for the history behind that name :P). I was curious at the recent cropping up of Asian restaurants in the city, (Mamagoto is another fine example – We were there too, and my review is here: Mamagoto, Nungambakkam). Naturally, we signed up and were there (Surprisingly, this time at least, I was there just some 35 mins late :P)
Disclaimer: This review is about 1.5 months old, and I’m sure the restaurant must have improved their fare by a considerable margin by now
Location: Beneath Bobby’s Bistro, in North Boag Road
Cuisine: Oriental
Ambiance:
- Dimly lit (In fact so dimly lit that not-so-experienced mobile photographers like myself were struggling to get even passable photos)
- Cozy
- Segmented to give you a cozy place for catching up or holding on to your privacy
Food:
Mode of serving here is buffet. I wish it had been a success, but sadly that wasn’t the case.
I’m not sure about Non-Vegetarian food, as I was a Vegetarian foodie that day 😛
Having said that, the vegetarian food was a total miss. Starting from a very regular soup, the food only went downhill. The only passable item that I had was Dokulampury Phad Himapan (Which is basically Gobi/Cauliflower Manchurian) and Cottage Cheese. Personally, I had a lot of expectations from Kaeng Keow Wahin Hed (Mushroom and Egg Plant Green Curry). But it let me down.
Overall, the vegetarian food was way below average. Considering they’re quite new, I really hope they work on the nitty-gritties and figure out their way forward. Asian cuisine is quite sensitive and it involves a fair amount of work to make it pleasant to everyone’s taste buds. So it’s indeed a uphill task that The East has on their hands right now !
Desserts: Jam cake was the best of the lot, and the only good thing amongst the desserts.
Rating:
Ambiance: 3.5/5

Overall: 3/5
