Jakob's Kitchen, Nungambakkam

This review is few weeks old. 3 of us went to Jakob’s Kitchen before new year for lunch. This review is based on the taste buds of pure vegetarians.

The Positives:

  1. The time taken by them to prepare and deliver the food.
  2. The Quantity of the food.
  3. Taste

I’ll go over the individual items.

Murungaikkai Soup: The soup was very good, not too watery and I enjoyed it a lot.

Vazhaipoo Vadai: This is a favourite of mine at home(where they cook it for me like maybe once a year). So I went ahead and chose this. Without doubt, this was a choice well made. And the quantity was sufficient for the 3 of us.

Baby Corn Varuval: This was just like the usual Baby Corn Fry and tasted usual.

Jawahar Jaloor Parotta Veg: Perhaps I expected a lot from this, it was very ordinary in all respects, though filling enough for one. I didn’t feel that happy about ordering this item.

Pallipalayam Kaai Biriyani: It tasted very well. It wasn’t too spicy at the same time, it wasn’t bland. The taste was perfect and it rated among one of the great biriyanis we had tasted. The quantity was quite filling.

Vetrilai Poondu Sadham: We loved it. I particularly wanted to try this out as I had heard rave reviews about it earlier. I wasn’t let down. However, my companions felt it was too spicy. I loved it though.

Urulai Thokku: I wonder why I even ordered this. It was very ordinary in taste, though the quantity was more than sufficient for two. Spicy flavor added another negative point to this.

Desserts:

Elaneer Halwa: I ordered this. It was literally dripping with ghee and just slid into my throat. I simply loved it. This was, according to me, the crown of my lunch.

Sirguma: I just had a small spoon of it(My companion finished it in no time). It was very good. It is like a payasam with dates and pineapple pieces.

Mettukudi Pudding: I tasted a small portion of this. Found it ok.

The total bill was for Rs. 1628, which I felt was a little on the high side for these dishes.

Overall:

Quantity: 4.5/5

Taste: 3.5/5

Cost/VFM: 3/5

Service: 3/5

Ambience: 3.5/5

Total: 3.5/ 5

The Negatives:

  1. I had called and reserved a table for 3 one and a half hour in advance, yet they were confused when we arrived and it took them 5 minutes to tell us we can take the table just opposite to the entrance.
  2. The next annoying incident was the time taken to pay us any attention and take our orders. It took them some 15 minutes to pay us any attention and ask for our orders. My friend who was near Choolaimedu was almost here by that time.

Excluding these two incidents, it was a positive experience overall and I would definitely give this place a try whenever I want to try out some native cuisine.
